Hush is a 2014 thriller short film written and directed by Douglas Harvey. It stars Ilze Colleen as a woman of mysterious origin who emerges from the depths of a forest and finds her way into civilization. But the actions she takes within the confusing realm of humanity lead her down a dark path that threatens to end dozens of lives in the process.

Hush contains no spoken dialogue other than the natural vocalizations from the human characters - breathing, grunting, panting, screaming, etc. One brief scene contains text on a television screen that serves as the only means of word-based exposition in the story. The short film was meant as a self-imposed challenge to test writer/director Douglas Harvey's abilities crafting and presenting a cohesive story entirely via cinematography/imagery, character actions and emotions, atmosphere, mood, sound and music without relying on the dialogue being an easy means of conveying what is happening in the film.

Cast[]

  • Ilze Colleen as Louise, a woman who emerges from the depths of a forest, seemingly unaccustomed to general society. Her brief but tragic foray into civilization sends her down a dark path that threatens to destroy dozens of lives. She is either mute or chooses not to speak.
  • Andrew Shaul as Bellamy, a young deaf man that Louise comes across in the forest who causes the spark that ignites the dark and violent path that Louise is forced to take. It is implied that they came from the same mysterious place in the woods and is thus also frightened and confused by the society he finds outside the woods.
  • Samantha Harvey has a cameo as a news reporter on a television that Louise sees while investigating a crime scene.
